Joan came to Florida with her husband, Dick, in 1972, and moved to Delray Beach in 1975. Joan is a former resident of Columbus, Ohio, where she worked in advertising.

She was raised a Christian Scientist, but started attending Unity of Delray Beach in 1983. She and Dick became members in 1984 and Joan started working for the church as office manager in 1987.

She retired from that position in 1992, but continued part-time as financial secretary until her retirement in 2006.
